On October 19th, 2023, the Baltimore City Fire Department and IAFF Local 734 faced dire and sadly familiar news that another brother of theirs had paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of their city.
Father of two and Apprentice Firefighter/EMT Rodney W. Pitts III, 31, of Engine Company 29, had just graduated from the fire academy in August. On this fateful day two months later, he would give his life while performing his duties as a firefighter at Box Alarm 46-40, a 2nd Alarm fire on the 5200 block of Linden Heights Ave.
Although only a few members of Paterson Fire were able to make the day trip to Maryland, they joined members of the Newark Firefighters Union. They traveled to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore to pay their respects and stand in brotherhood alongside the many other contingencies from Departments across the continent and with the members of BCFD.
A GoFundMe has been set up to support the family of FF Pitts at https://gofund.me/154b745e .
The Paterson Firefighters Association thanks the Newark Firefighters Union for their assistance.
